Why is Apple hiring dozens of new mapping experts and engineers?
Apple is on a hiring spree. See the screenshot below for their job listings containing the keyword ‘maps’.
Reportedly, over 70 job listings are posted on Apple’s job page concerning their maps team, issuing developers, and analysts or requiring skills around things like: “geospatial information services,” “navigational aids” and “fleet management.”
Obviously, Apple Maps is chasing its all-time maps competitor Google Maps in a race to become the #1 mapping product. But according to various sources like CNBC, Apple is also hiring maps technicians to outsmart Google and other vendors in the race for AI and autonomous dominance, two big promises Apple made earlier.
Here’s what Apple CEO Tim Cook said about on autonomous systems: topics during this week’s earnings call.
On autonomous systems:
In terms of autonomous systems, what we’ve said is that we are very focused on autonomous systems from a core technology point of view. We do have a large project going and are making a big investment in this. From our point of view, autonomy is the mother of all AI projects. And the autonomous systems can be used in a variety of ways and a vehicle is only one. But there are many different areas of it and I don’t want to go any further with that.
Autonomous Driving seems a logical and safe bet for Apple. Aunotnous cars need top quality location technology to bring their passengers safely from A to B, and Apple’s Mapping Products already are renowned for their precision.
Why Apple involves itself with self-driving technology
It’s also assumed that by improving and developing the map capabilities for the future of driving, Apple can develop itself and its technology to become the ‘core-technology’ from which self-driving car market can further develop itself. Apple already has been busy developing and testing prototypes of self-driving technology after they received a permit to drive and test on public roads.
I bet exciting times are ahead with Apple slowly spreading more and more hints about their autonomous projects. Cook has repeatedly called autonomous systems the “mother of all AI projects,” referring to their project commonly referred to as ‘Project Titan’. According to sources from CNBC in June,
Apple CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly called autonomous systems the “mother of all AI projects,” and the company has a car endeavor underway, reportedly dubbed Project Titan.
It will only be a matter of time before we know what we really can expect from Cook. But rest assured, it’s going to be big and you probably are going to love it. Stay tuned to our blog to read any update about this topic.
